Basic Skull Hat Pattern

This pattern is meant to be a generic hat to which you can apply an infinite amount of inspiration. Working with natural fiber yarns of your choice - take this pattern and make it your own.

Cast on the appropriate # of sts (based on the yarn type you have chosen - see chart below) and join in the round without twisting sts, placing a marker to indicate beginning of round.

Possible Brims

A) RIBBING - All the suggested cast on #'s are divisible by 4 - You can work

   K1,P1
K2,P2
K3,P1
K1,P3
or change to a different division for a different ribbing.

* How much brim do you want?
   one - two inches?
   a fold-up doubled brim?

B) PICOT EDGE -
     Knit 4 rounds
     Work one round*(Y0, K2tog) repeat from *around
     Knit 4 rounds
     - Fold this to the inside & sew later for a dainty scalloped edge.

C) Add one st. for an odd # of cast on sts and work in seed st for 1.5-2"

D) ROLLED EDGE: Knit every round X 10 rnds

E) Your Idea for the Brim

Main Part of Hat

Working in the round, knit until hat measures 5-7" from the cast on edge (more if you have a fold-up brim).

To turn this into a tam or beret then increase (in one round) the total # of sts as follows sock wt - 176 sts, dk - 136 sts, worsted - 120 sts, bulky - 80 sts.

Decrease to top (multiple of 8 sts)

  * (k6, K2tog) repeat from * around
      K1 round
  * (K5, K2tog) rep from * around
      K1 round
  * (K4, K2tog) rep from * around
      K1 round
  * (K3, K2tog) rep from * around
      K1 round
  * (K2, K2tog) rep from * around
      K1 round
  * (K1, K2tog) rep from *
      around K1 round
  * (K2tog) rep from * around TWICE.

  - for a flatter top omit the (K1 round).
  - for a longer hat knit 10-20 rounds between each decrease round
  - for tam or beret: use remaining sts at the end to make an I-cord about 1.5-2" long. Break yarn and close stitches. Bury ends & tie I-cord into a top-knot.

Break yarn and run thru remaining sts In THE ROUND. Bury ends.
